Are Your Smart Locks Suitable for a Coastal Property?

Are Your Smart Locks Suitable for a Coastal Property?

Yes, with conditions. If you live anywhere near the coast, you know how quickly salt air can wear things down. Our locks are not marine-grade, so a coastal install will shorten the working life of the electronics and finishes compared with a non-coastal install. We do support customers installing in seaside properties on that understanding, but only if you contact us before you install, so we can discuss and agree warranty cover for your specific property first.

Why coastal air is different
Salt-laden coastal air corrodes internal electronics and lifts keypad and touchpad coatings faster than a non-coastal install, regardless of model or finish. This isn't a defect in a particular lock, it's a property of the environment, and it applies across our range.

Before you install, contact us with your address so we can talk through what cover looks like for your property. Coastal warranty cover is not a standard, advertised term — it's arranged case by case, based on your location and level of exposure, not applied automatically.

Standard Warranty
Our usual warranty is 12 months from date of purchase. You can find full details on our Warranty page. However, these terms change for properties near the coast or exposed to salt air or high humidity.

What Counts as “Coastal” for Warranty?
You don’t have to be right on the beachfront. We treat any property within roughly 10 km of the ocean, or anywhere you regularly get salt air, as a coastal install. For example, we’ve seen salt damage to locks up to 6km from the beach.

Stainless Steel Finish? Still Needs Coastal Caution
Some of our smart locks use a stainless-steel finish, but this doesn’t make the lock protected against salt air. Stainless helps with surface rust, but it can’t protect the internal electronics or keypad overlays. The reduced coastal warranty still applies.

Weather Exposure: Different Issue
Whether you’re coastal or not, full weather exposure is not covered under any warranty. Direct rain, hot sun, or installing a lock with no cover (eave or awning) voids warranty. Our locks are splash-resistant (IP55), not waterproof

Common Coastal Faults
Typical issues we see in salt-air environments:
  1. Corroded ports
  2. Peeling keypads or touchpad overlays
  3. Faster battery drain due to moisture and salt
Not Sure if You’re ‘Coastal’?
If you’re not sure, or you’re experiencing any of the issues above, please get in touch and send us your address. Happy to help you clarify if the coastal warranty terms apply to your property.
