The Wi-Fi Gateway, also known as the Wi-Fi Bridge is a device that connects your smart door lock to your home Wi-Fi network. Its primary purpose is to enable you to control your lock from anywhere with an internet connection. Here are some of the things you can do with the Wi-Fi Gateway connected to your smart lock:
Remote Access: You can lock and unlock your door remotely, which is especially useful if you need to let someone in when you're not at home or if you're unsure whether you locked the door after leaving.
Access Code Management: The Wi-Fi Gateway allows you to create and change access codes for your lock through an app on your smartphone or tablet. This is convenient for giving temporary access to guests without the need to give them physical keys.
Activity Monitoring: With the Wi-Fi Gateway, you can check the activity logs of your smart lock from anywhere. This means you can see when and by whom the lock has been accessed, adding an extra layer of security and peace of mind.
Smart Home Integration: If you want to use voice commands to control your lock through virtual assistants like Amazon Alexa or Google Home, the Wi-Fi Gateway is essential. It acts as a communication link between your smart lock and these devices, enabling voice control features.
Is the Wi-Fi Gateway Necessary?
A
Wi-Fi Gateway is a useful addition to your smart door lock if you would like to control and monitor your lock remotely.
However, some of our smart door lock models now have Wi-Fi built in, meaning they connect directly to your Wi-Fi network and do not require a separate Wi-Fi Gateway. These models include:
- SDL-SA1
- SDL-AX1-C
- SDL-PP2
If you have one of these models, you can enjoy Wi-Fi-enabled features without needing an additional Gateway.
Which gateway do you need?
Does the Lock Work Without a Wi-Fi Gateway?
Yes. Smart door locks without built-in Wi-Fi will work independently without a
Wi-Fi Gateway and can be unlocked using five convenient methods:
- Fingerprint
- Passcode
- Fob
- Phone app
- Key
Without a Wi-Fi Gateway, however, app-based functions are limited to Bluetooth range. This means you can use the app to unlock the door and manage users, including setting or deleting users, as long as you are within close proximity to the lock.
So, if your lock does not have built-in Wi-Fi and you only need the standard features, you do not need a Wi-Fi Gateway. The lock will continue to operate normally using all five unlocking methods.
If you would like to manage the lock when you are away from home, a Wi-Fi Gateway is recommended. It gives you the added convenience of remote access, remote user management and smartphone notifications.
How Does the Wi-Fi Gateway Work?
For compatible models without built-in Wi-Fi, the
Wi-Fi Gateway is a separate device that connects your smart lock to your home Wi-Fi network.
It needs to be plugged into a power outlet approximately 3–7 metres from the lock, and must remain within Bluetooth range. The Gateway communicates with the lock via Bluetooth and connects to your home network using 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.

Is It Better to Buy the Gateway With the Lock?
If your chosen lock does not have built-in Wi-Fi and you think you will want remote access or smartphone notifications, it is more economical to purchase the
Wi-Fi Gateway as a bundle with your smart lock rather than adding it later.
Ultimately, whether you need a Wi-Fi Gateway depends on the model of lock you choose and how you plan to use it. The
SDL-SA1,
SDL-AX1-C and
SDL-PP2 have built-in Wi-Fi and do not require a separate Gateway. For other compatible models, the lock will work perfectly well on its own using Bluetooth, while adding a
Wi-Fi Gateway provides the flexibility to unlock your door, manage users and receive notifications from anywhere.
