Why is the keypad or touchscreen overlay on my lock peeling?
If you've noticed that the keypad or touchscreen on your smart lock is peeling, this is typically the result of environmental exposure rather than a manufacturing defect.
Prolonged exposure to sunlight, salt air, and rain can gradually break down the protective coating and the adhesive beneath it. Over time, this can affect both the appearance and the overall lifespan of the lock.
Common Causes
Direct Sun (UV). A small amount of sunlight is generally not an issue. However, continuous exposure to direct sunlight can significantly accelerate the deterioration of the keypad or touchscreen coating.
Salt air. If your property is located within approximately 10 km of the coastline, the lock is considered to be operating in a corrosive environment. Salt carried in the air can accelerate the breakdown of external materials and reduce the lifespan of the lock. The closer the installation is to the ocean, the greater the impact.
Rain and Moisture. Our keypads and fingerprint readers are rated IP55, meaning they are designed to withstand occasional light splashes of water only. They are not waterproof and not marine grade, and prolonged exposure to rain or harsh coastal conditions can reduce their service life.
