Case Study: Setting Up a Smart Lock for a Rental Property

Lock Model: Smart Medium – Fingerprint and Keyless Entry Mortise Lock (SDL-H2)

A homeowner who installed our Fingerprint and Keyless Entry Mortise Lock (SDL-H2) lock contacted us to find out the best way to give tenants access without compromising ownership or security when renting out their property.

Their main goals were:
  1. Allowing tenants to create their own fingerprints and access codes
  2. Enabling tenants to check battery levels through the app
  3. Ensuring they retained ownership and full control of the lock
  4. Easily removing tenant access when tenants moved out

Understanding the User Hierarchy, Roles and Permissions of our Smart Door Locks

Our Recommendation

We advised the homeowner (landlord) to make the tenant an Authorised Admin in the app. This role gives the tenant limited administrative control—enough to manage daily use, such as adding their own codes or checking the battery level—while keeping ultimate ownership with the main account holder.

Only the Bluetooth Administrator (the original owner,  the landlord in this case) can create or remove Authorised Admins. This means the homeowner(landlord) remains in full control and can revoke tenant access at any time.

For detailed steps on setting up an Authorised Admin, see our guide here:

Why This Works for Rentals

This setup is ideal for homeowners who rent out their property or manage multiple tenancies. Each new tenant can have temporary access without the risk of retaining control after moving out. Once a tenancy ends, the owner simply removes the Authorised Admin or resets the e-keys for complete security.

Key Takeaway

When renting out your home, always keep the lock registered under your own account and add tenants as Authorised Admins. This ensures you maintain ownership while giving renters the convenience and functionality they need during their stay.
